Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, Spanish for "rich port", was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Puerto Rico, located in the northeastern Caribbean, comprises an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, Spain possessed Puerto Rico for over 400 years until the United States defeated them in the Spanish American War in 1898. The island is now a United States territory and Puerto Ricans are US citizens.

World Servant teams started serving in Puerto Rico in 2012 to help meet both the physical and spiritual needs of our partner communities. We work alongside local community leaders, helping with visionary goals including projects such as building a church youth camp or new church, as well as renovation projects, working alongside with community members. Projects have included:

  • Construction of a new youth camp in Ciales
  • Building churches, community buildings and individual homes in Arecibo
  • Activities such as painting, installing windows, doors, flooring and block walls

World Servants focus will be having mission teams assist in the building of a new addition to a church in Arecibo. Previous construction experience is not needed; just willing hands and hearts.

The Iglesia de Cristo en Arecibo is a growing church led by the host community leader Jim Gullette. The church is located on the Northern Coastal Plain region of Puerto Rico, and is in need of help to create sustainable long-term change. The congregation currently meets in a converted two bedroom, one bathroom home and recently had 95 in attendance with a large percentage of that number in children and young people. They are building a new worship space with expanded classroom, fellowship and bathroom areas.
