Diamonds in the Rough

February 5th, 2013

“Diamonds in the rough,” is how a pastor from the hills of Jellico, TN described his Appalachian community where World Servants have served for more than 10 years. This description is so true and gives wonderful insight to an area which has seen hard times that continue with the struggling economy, drug abuse, and teen pregnancy. But underneath all the roughness and challenges you see amazing beauty and value. There is no monetary value, or hidden diamonds or gold in the hills, but the people are the valuable resources here. We are working alongside the church, community leaders and families to help with the many needs such as building handicap wheelchair ramps, fixing leaking roofs and painting homes. We are doing this to meet a need, but also with the hope these acts of service and kindness will open doors and encourage a family, make new friendships, inspire someone to see themselves in a different light and to bring hope that comes from Christ.
