Our team arrived on the Southwestern shores of Lake Winnipeg on
July 19, 2015 to experience a week with the dear First Nation people of the Fisher River Cree(FRCN). The team included a family from Memphis, Tennessee and two moms and two daughters from the Dallas, Texas area. The experience was meteorologically in the HEART of summer, so the weather was beautiful. We acquainted ourselves with the more than 140-year history of the Cree during this week preceding their annual Treaty Days celebration. What a joy and privilege to come alongside of these great stewards of the north country that they have taken great pride in developing. We will bring multiple teams – Lord willing – in 2016. The FRCN has lived out and taught the principle “Expect nothing. Appreciate everything.” They are grateful for all that we got to do with them. More details soon.

Cree Nation

Serving in the First Nation, Fisher River, Manitoba

July 22nd, 2013

World Servants is excited about serving in the Cree for the second year. Fisher River is located about two hours north of Winnipeg. Our contact is George Crate, the Community Economic Development Director. George is a wonderful community host and has been key in making it possible for World Servants to bring teams into the community.

Last year at the end of July we took a team of seventeen people to serve for a week. It was fun to work with Angie Cochrane and Carl community leaders. We had the opportunity to serve by painting the inside of the Fisher River Arena Complex. It was a big job but the team tackled it without blinking.

Angie Cochrane, was a wonderful host and made sure we had all the supplies we needed to complete the job. Carl Cochrane made it possible for us to stay at the lovely new youth cabin located right on the water. Carl and his wife hosted the team for a traditional fish dinner. The Chief of the Council made time to join us and share some history about the Cree people. Toward the end of our time we hosted a Bar-B-Q with the community and it was so much fun to spend time with community members. It was wonderful to exchange stories and play with the children.

We look forward to returning in 2013.

At the end of July 2012, a team of seventeen people from World Servants served for a week painting the inside of the Fisher River Arena Complex; it was a huge job, but the team tackled it without blinking an eye! It was great working alongside Angie and Carl Cochrane, two other Cree community leaders, and getting to know them better.

Angie made sure we had all the supplies we needed to complete the job and Carl made it possible for us to stay at the lovely new youth cabin located right on the water. Carl and his wife hosted the entire team for a traditional fish dinner, which was such a treat for all of us. The Chief of the Council took time to join us and shared some of the history about the Cree people. One of the last days in Fisher River, the World Servants team hosted a barbeque for the Cree community. It was so much fun to spend time with community members, to exchange stories and to play with the children.
