Jammin' in Jamaica with World Servants
Jamaica conjures up visions of beautiful beaches, tropical breezes and amazing resorts all making the island a hot bed for newlyweds and the perfect place for a honeymoon. But Jamaica also has a high rate of poverty, a glaring need for education and care for orphans.
According to Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding the country's poverty rate has become a "national crisis", jumping to 16.5 percent; the highest rate since 2004. Half a million Jamaicans deal daily with poor housing, limited access to food, waterborne illnesses due to dirty water and less than adequate education.
Since 1990, World Servants has partnered with Pastor Leroy Gordon and his wife, Marcia, who lead the Christian Community Fellowship church. The church runs a thriving pre-school and kindergarten for children 3-6 years old. Our ministry efforts are focused on the Jamaican children; working on several public school projects and an orphanage. World Servants has built two schools for the deaf, has renovated schools around the parish and recently completed a community center.
World Servants mission experiences to Jamaica are 7 days in duration. We spend 4 days in the community working on a construction project, participating in Kids' Club and going on home visits to see firsthand what life is like in rural Jamaica. Our short-term teams live in the community and walk between the housing site and ministry activities everyday, which is a great way to get to know people and create valuable relationships.
Teams have the opportunity to serve, build relationships with and pray for the community, many of whom feel hopeless and oppressed by poverty. World Servants believes in the power of meeting physical needs as a practical demonstration of God's love for people. As a result, trust and respect are created between communities and our mission teams. Our hands-on ministry activities create a platform for talking about God and faith as we work alongside community members on construction projects.
If you are looking for a truly remote jungle mission trip close to the states, then Jamaica is your place. The whole trip experience is one people will never forget! For more information call 800-881-2170, send email to DeLise Kroening or click on the dates below:
